President Biden visits Philly to launch new outreach to Black voters

Inquirer: The Inquirer’s Julia Terruso reported on President Biden’s trip to Philadelphia on May 29. The purpose of the President’s visit is to boost support among Black voters.  He visited Girard School, a majority-Black preparatory school to make remarks.

The city’s Democratic share of the statewide vote has declined in recent years and polling has shown an erosion of Biden’s support among nonwhite voters statewide, and here in the city, where Black voters make up about 33% of the population.

Biden often picks Philadelphia or the region for big campaign moments. He started the year with a big speech near Valley Forge National Historic Park and delivered an address focused on Civil Rights from the Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center in April.

Philadelphia is the largest Democratic city in a state that the President badly needs to win. Joe Biden won Pennsylvania in 2020 by a narrow margin of 50% to Trump’s 48.8%. The Biden campaign sees Pennsylvania and the other ‘blue wall states,’ Michigan and Wisconsin, as key to his reelection.
