The Associated Press has an excellent review of the budget debate starting in Harrisburg this week.

The state’s new fiscal year starts on July 1 and Governor Josh Shapiro (D) hopes to avoid another ugly disagreement with Republican state legislators. Luckily, Pennsylvania has a massive surplus which should make it somewhat easier to resolve the issues.

The Governor’s highest priority is providing additional funding for the state’s public schools.

Republicans control the state Senate and are prioritizing tax-cuts.

Last year’s budget debate saw a fight over a school voucher program.
