INQUIRER: The fight for school vouchers in PA is back
The Inquirer’s Gillian McGoldrick has excellent coverage of how the school voucher debate is returning as the state legislature in Harrisburg begins annual budget discussions. Last year, the school voucher issue became a sticking point that stalled the state budget for several months.
Last year, Gov. Josh Shapiro (D) supported a limited voucher program. Republicans, who generally support vouchers as a way of criticizing public schools and teachers’ unions, quickly seized upon the issue. Pennsylvania’s richest person – billionaire investor Jeff Yass – has bankrolled an aggressive effort to promote vouchers.
The teachers’ unions eventually won last year’s battle. But this year’s debate is expected to be equally intense.
